a vegetable seller

Maruti, a poor vegetable seller in Bhilar,a small village in Satara district. He belongs to the backward Bauddha community, followers of Babasaheb Ambedkar. The village is part of the strawberry belt and is dominated by the Maratha community who own most of the land.
Maruti came to Bhilar 50 years back as a farm labourer. Luckily he got a job in Anjuman-i-Islam School in Panchgani as a watchman. Soon his wife also joined him ,working as an attendant in the school. After working for 25 years in the school Maruti left the school and started his own vegetable shop in Bhilar. He borrowed little money from his brothers and purchased vegetables from Wai and sold them at nominal prices in Bhilar. Even after 15 years he earns barely enough to feed his family. His children,2 sons live with him in Bhilar. One son owns a minitruck and earns about Rs.2500/- in a month and the other does odd jobs in Metgutad.Maruti lives in a simple mudhut in Bhilar.
Both Maruti and his wife open shop at 8AM and close at 9PM. His wife also sells dryfish to supplement the family income. Both are happy, honest, contented and always willing to lend a helping hand to any needy person.
